The bookworm: The Woman In Me, by Britney Spears [review/opinion]

The Woman in Me is a brave and astonishingly moving story about freedom, fame, motherhood, survival, faith, and hope.

In June 2021, the whole world was listening as Britney Spears spoke in open court. The impact of sharing her voice—her truth—was undeniable, and it changed the course of her life and the lives of countless others. The Woman in Me reveals for the first time her incredible journey—and the strength at the core of one of the greatest performers in pop music history.

Written with remarkable candor and humor, Spears’s groundbreaking book illuminates the enduring power of music and love—and the importance of a woman telling her own story, on her own terms, at last.

I'm a huge Britney spears fan. I've enjoyed & admired her from the Mickey Mouse Club, her music career, through to today - I remember joining the MMC official fan club as a 7 year old & receiving my membership pack in a VHS cover, and being excited because I thought that I was getting an actual VHS...

The way she was treated for years by the media, a segment of her family, some "friends" & a large part of the public has been horrendous & heartbreaking to see, so when she finally got her voice & freedom back and announced her autobiography, I was delighted that we'd finally be getting to hear her unfiltered accounts on the highs and traumatic lows she has endured.

As soon as the hardback edition became available for pre-order on Amazon, you could be sure that I was clicking on it so that it'd be dropping through my letterbox on the day of release...

The writing style is fast-paced and the chapters are all short, so this book is a quick & easy read. I'm not being negative about the way it is written - I spent my younger years devouring her various interviews & TV appearances, have been to all of Britney’s International tours & have watched the majority of her various behind-the-scenes documentaries and know that she speaks very quickly and is actually shy & awkward, so I found the writing style to be very authentic and endearing.

Since the book is relatively short [275 pages] I wondered if she would skip straight to her later life, but she touches on all of the significant moments throughout her entire life. Sometimes it does feel like a mere blink of a look back at some parts, but many events are very upsetting & painful for her to revisit, so I can't complain that she doesn't want to go too deep with it all. It was still enough to reduce me to tears a few times.

One thing that stuck out to me; Britney was still married when writing this book, so I'm wondering if a updat ed edition is being planned for release in the not-too-distant future - maybe around the time that a paperback version is released, a new illustrated hardback edition could be released too?

Ultimately I'm so pleased that Britney has finally gotten her freedom & voice back and has the opportunity to stand up & be heard. I wish her and her sons well in healing & living a light out of the glare of the spotlight if that is her desire ✨️ ❤️

I'm listing to the book on Amazon because it is cheaper then anywhere else.

I do like supporting independent & second-hand bookshops the majority of the time, but as most of us know, watching our spending is extremely necessary in this day & age and sometimes corners have to be cut.
