A closer look at... The Lemonade Craze eyeshadow palette [by Maybelline].

"Bring on wearable neutrals with bold splashes of colour from Maybelline's Lemonade Craze. A fresh take on the classic palette, these pigmented shades offer endless possibilities. Softer hues to highlight, darker shades to amplify and define, and bright pops of citrus inspired colours to make your eyes pop!

Like with the Smashbox + Vlada collection, the Lemonade Craze eyeshadow palette was something that I saw on Instagram (Trendmood) and thought looked fun, but assumed was a US only release as UK stores [I used to check displays in Boots & Superdrug almost every time I went in] have yet to receive it. However Amazon UK have just recieved it [different palette layout to the US edition, so it's not just overstock], so us UKers can now get our fiizz on...

Old Fashioned (chocolate matte), Icepop (mid-pink matte), Strawberry Lemonade (pink champagne shimmer), Berry Ice (ballet pink matte)

Citrus (peach-toned champagne shimmer), Sweet Tea (fawn matte), Sherbet (peach-toned cream matte), Main Squeeze (ice lemon shimmer)

Sugar Coated (copper shimmer), Coral Punch (peach-toned coral matte), Lemonade Craze (canary yellow matte), Sunnie's (ivory matte)

The strongest point for this palette is that the shades are neither too warm or too cool once applied, so they'll work with any undertones. Most of the neutral-leaning shades have a subtle fruity undertone, so aren't as 'boring' as I'd first dismissed them as being. I also really appreciate that the majority of the shadows are matte, as I have hooded eyes so the shimmer shades do transfer on me a bit. The matte shadows swatch well, but ultimately aren't very pigmented and feel a bit powdery, so the manipulation caused by applying and blending them on the eyes results in some colour fade. But they do still last all day with little additional colour fade and no to very little creasing. The shimmer shadows feel creamier, don't fade as much and wear the same as the mattes. The shadows have a delicate sweet & fruity fragrance (lemonade?), that is so soft that I need to have my nose up against the palette to detect it, and after the palette has been opened a few times there's hardly any scent left.

The eyeshadow pans are split into three quads, with the central quad being larger than the other two; a bit of a waste in my opinion, as the largest quad is the one with the most easily dupeable shades in. This is a limited edition themed palette, so I do think that Maybelline should have put one of the actual 'lemonade' themed quads in the larger pans.

What a shame. Lemonade Craze is a cheerful mix of shades that promised to be fun as the initial swatches were great, but I'm going to have to say "skip it" after using it a few times- if you're don't have a fair skintone I'm not sure how/if the shades would work for you since the majority of the shades are on the lighter end of the spectrum and the pigmentation is poor even if  you are fair, so none of the shades apply close to their pan appearance. I know that I can get a better quality for less money [eg RevolutionCity Color or Primark], so there's nothing for me to recommend here. If/when stores like Boots or Superdrug sell the palette and are running a 3-for-2 or similar, then it might be worth considering to see if the quality varies, but there are no guarantees that your palette would be better.
The Lemonade Craze eyeshadow palette is on Amazon UK for £14.39.
