I thought I'd keep things real on the blog, by sharing a recent look that didn't really work out. Having clear photos of it available does help me see where I went wrong, so it's a good idea to post things like this for future reference...
I went to the live concert that is part of Manchester's Pride Festival weekend and decided to try to recreate the 'reverse smokey eye look' I'd just watched YouTuber BeautBean do, as it looked quick n easy, yet impactful on her - because recreating a look without having ever attempting the technique before, is a recipe for success.
Sigh...
Let me whine about Pride a bit; we got dropped off at the street named on the tickets, but didn't see the accessible entrance or any "this way" signs. So we phone the number of one of the event organizers given on the ticket in case anyone needed help, and he just tells us to use Google Maps. Cheers mate - you were a massive help...
By the time we found our way to the Mayfield Depot and then found the wheelchair platform (we had to ask half a dozen Pride volunteers who all gave us different directions, before a regular Mayfield security guard literally had to escort us to it) - we ended up missing the first two acts, by the time we'd found our place.
It got better from there, right? Nope. The access platform was over filled - most of the people who truly needed it were crammed near the back, so we got a good view of the backs of everyone else's heads, but little else. I'd gone with my mum (going to see Ariana Grande again after the 'incident' at the last Manchester concert was meant to be a healing activity) who went to buy food and drinks an hour before Bananarama and it took her over two hours to get back, so she missed them (they made her leave the Depot for some unknown reason and queue up to get back in again). We both had panic attacks in the loud crowds and smokey atmosphere, but couldn't even be there to hold each other's hands...
At least Ariana Grande sounded great; I never actually laid eyes on her, but it was a awesome set to listen to.
Also; our bags were never checked, we never got wristbands or accessible toilet passes, the site was filled with loose gravel and the already overcrowded wheelchair platform was gradually overtaken by regular concert goers - not once did I see staff check to see if the people should have been there.
I was sick in bed for three days after Pride- never going again.
Anyway, back to the makeup; I'd just impulsively bought a eyeshadow palette with pretty pink & purple matte shades and was intending to use that, but then I suddenly decided that the periwinkle and pink matte shades in the ABH Norvina palette would match the tee I'd bought & distressed for the concert.
Using the gentle shades and a softer formula was what I consider my biggest downfall to be; I layered the shades too much to make a bit of depth, so that they no longer smoked & faded out as gently in my outer eyes compared to how they did at first - also I carried the shades too far into my outer eyes. As for the inner corner highlight; I'd just given up by that point, so just clumsily put it on...
Hmmm, I'll have to give the reverse smokey look another go whenever I decide to crack open the Colour Burst palette and wear some of the vibrant eyeshadow shades, since I know where I went wrong with the look this time [at least I think I know].
I'm wearing Go Big Or Go Home mascara, by Kat Von D Beauty. My review and photos comparing it against my bare lashes are on this page.
My swatches & looks with other shades with, plus my review and where-to-buy links for the Norvina palette are here.
The reverse smokey look I wanted to recreate is look 2 in this video.
